A break...

Been a while since i have reported on anything new and it is because there isn't any news to report on. Squalora has been laying low for the past month or two and will continue to do so over the summer. With members out of town working and Matt leaving for the road with Raw Nerves for a 3 week west coast tour, we are focusing on our personal lives a bit right now. Summer is finally upon us here in Portland and camping is high on the priority list, at least for me. Our LP "hell is other people" is out courtesy of our homie Marty at Minor Bird Records. He is an awesome guy who does nothing but work and promote/release bands that he likes. Please check out Minor Bird Records online via real website and blogspot. Check out the bands and throw this guy some $'s for some premium underground punk awesomeness.

Our newest recording is by far the proudest that i have ever been with how it turned out. Greg at Earhammer Studio in Oakland did the knob twisting and is a wizard with sonics and distortion and a stand up dude to boot. Be sure to check out his band Brainoil as they have a much overdue new LP coming out via the great Oly label, 20 buck spin.

Our new 4 songs in 16 minutes are, at the moment, just sitting dormant. We are tossing around the idea of releasing this as a split LP with our soulmates in thunder, Stoneburner (members of Buried at Sea!). we are all poor and not doing much so we'll see if this comes to fruition. I am thinking of just releasing this as a cassette with silk screened covers, you know because tapes are rad, cheap and punk.

We are proud to announce that we have been invited to play in Missoula, MT on Friday, September 23rd for KBGA's annual Birthday bash. At the moment we are not sure who else is on the bill but we'll get it posted as soon as we know. Thats about it for now kiddos. Keep on fight! -tom

Recording with a wizard

So we just returned from a short one week trip to the Bay Area and back. We spent 4 days recording in a large West Oakland warehouse called Ear Hammer - home of Greg and Salvador - 2 awesome and generous folks who had a cozy environment to accommodate all 5 of us as we tried new ideas and tried lots of amps and drums of which all belonged to them! Attention to detail, good spirits, open to new ideas, incredibly affordable, and a freaking bass wizard from Brainoil who's background is playing in, doing live sound for, amp repair, and recording heavy music running the knobs and computer. That's my favorite set up; analog board, diverse mics, super fast and efficient computer set up with tons of vintage plug-ins.Our homie and roadie of many years, Buddy Stedman, came along and was an awesome addition to the crew. Besides loading gear, selling merch, etc., he was grocery and beer shopping for all of us as well as preparing some killer meals and snacks for everyone. Not to mention the tremendous amount of herbal and alcohol abuse! He was always the guy with the fancy phone and could google anything for us. It was convenient and everything but i miss the old traveling days of no cell phones and computers. Oh well. Hopefully I can keep focused on fascination. The recording rules and it is 4 songs in 16 minutes and it is heavy and powerful sounding. The tones are awesome and clear and the mix is solid. Hopefully to become a split LP with another PDX band.

The few shows we played were really fun and we got the luxury of playing with a lot of diverse and cool bands. I love seeing polished sounding metal bands as much as i do love watching a young forming punk band playing their hearts out on shitty equipment. Keep it mixed, keep it fun, and no matter how metal you think you are... keep it punk.

Here's a few side notes: The Bay Area is fucking expensive. Oakland is way less sketchy than it used to be. Arcata still knows how to have a good time and throw killer shows. Greg Wilkinson rules. Redwoods rule. Roaming around San Fransisco on a nice day rules. Playing hardcore punk with your friends still rules. Wondering why some people love mediocre music still baffles me. The smell of 5 burrito dudes is gross.

Next show is on Friday, April 8th with Elitist, Atriarch (cd release show), and Druden at Blackwater Records! Super rad lineup and only $3! 7PM sharp!!!!

our next show is gonna be killer! Dead by Dawn and Absence of Light! Lots of heavy riffs going on here folks. This is our mini tour/recording trip to the Bay Area and Arcata kick off show. We'll be recording 4 new songs clocking in at 16 minutes with Greg Wilkinson of Brainoil at his West Oakland house of thunder, Earhammer Studio. We'll also be playing a few shows in the bay and arcata. TBA real soon!!!
